Group Meeting 31/10/2011

In todays group meeting we talked about how we were going to finish our Storyboard and talked about all the tasks we have left to do and how we need to keep up with our tasks and manage them. We also thought about wardrobe for the band members, we thought about our target research through the social networks and how we would get some feedback.

Location: Dartford Heath

After hearing back from the Council about our request, we both met up at the heath and browsed around to find potential scenes for us to film our video. what we looked for was a setting which was secluded and crowded by trees creating a creepy atmosphere and involving on set scenery for the band to play around with. For example the femme fatal would be imagined hiding behind trees and given space to run and be followed by the band members.
here are a few areas of the heath we found to suit that idea.

Site Permissions

When shooting in any location you have to have permission otherwise you can get into trouble with the owner of the land and also the law. We are going to shoot our video in a large wooded area in Dartford this area is owned by the council. So I have emailed them asking for permission to shoot there during the daytime this is what the email looks like:

The Orignal e-mail that I sent to the council asking for permission.
I then got an e-mail back from the council saying that they are pending my request.

An e-mail I got from a press officer at the council asking me for details of when and what I would be shooting.

I then sent a reply e-mail giving her all the details about the dates we would be shooting on and also about what locations we would be shooting on. I then listed all the equipment that we would be taking with use and also I told her that we wouldn't be shooting in any of the public path areas so we wouldn't be getting in the way of anyone. I also said how many people would be there including both the actors and the crew.
This is the final e-mail that I got from Dartford council confirming that we had permission to shoot on the heath area.

Music Video Analysis 2

Music Video Analysis 1

Editing done by Jack.

Group Meeting 06/10/11

Todays group meeting we finalised an idea for our music video on the concept of having a femme fatal character as a hallucination throughout the narrative side of our video. We thought that throughout the narrative we could have the band following the girl and the having each member of the band killed off and then for the performance side have the member removed from each shot. We feel that since the target audience involves more females than males it would be a good idea to use a powerful female character in the video.

We also completed our pitch proposal in front of the green screen and our fellow class mates. We believe that this went successfully as we received good feed back from our mentor and peers.

Camera: Enhancing an Idea

When looking at inspiration for our music video, we looked at ways where the camera can be used for simple but clever ideas. For example this video of 'Souled Out!!!' by Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, uses a backdrop of pre-recorded footage of everyday activities and random locations and uses the lead singer to act in front of the backdrop as if he would be in the location as well.

The camera cleverly capture the singer and backdrop by using a frame that fits the screen, it only becomes apparent to the viewers how this is filmed at the end when the camera reveals the whole studio.

Another Video is by 'All American Rejects' called 'Move Along' except this video keeps the singer in the same rule of third through out the video when the camera is facing him. The clever trick about this video is the editing when the scene has changed and the singer's wardrobe has changed the lip syncing stays perfect throughout the clip even through very fast scene changes.

References and Inspiration: Music Videos

We have had many inspirations from previous successful music videos and these have helped us create are own unique narrative and design. One of these music videos was Robbie William's 'Rock DJ' where in it her appeared dancing for a group of girls. This video inspired us to add a femme fetal character into our video because this would appeal to our target audience. In this video Robbie Williams is show as being outnumbered by woman who are stereotypically show in videos as being pieces of meat. But in this video the whole concept is flipped so the male is show as being a sexual object instead. At this time we where still thinking of an idea of what/who could be our monster in the video and how this could relate to our target market. When we saw this video in a lesson we discussed the idea of having a femme fetal in our concept and agreed this would be a viable option as this would both relate to the lyrics and also appeal to our target audience as they would feel empowered by a woman taking the lead.

References and Inspirations: Artists

Our band is going to be styled and personalized similarly to the most successful bands around at the moment. We are going to look at 'You Me At Six' and 'Two Door Cinema Club' as we feel they appeal to the same target audience that we need to attract.

You Me At Six
  • Their music appeals to both genders but the majority would be female fans
  • Their style and appearance would attract both male and female fans
  • The band members are icons to the public and trend setters
  • They are a British band who have appealed to both British and American fans
  • Their vocals are quite unique giving them their own style
Two Door Cinema Club
  • Their music is very modern and attracts a new generation of fans
  • Aren't the typical boy band but have their own style of geek sheek
  • Are an Irish band that give a unique sound to their vocals much alike You Me At Six
  • Made up of 3 musicians which again is not the stereotype boy band.

Image and Genre

We have been looking at a few different boy bands that have been very successful and then looked at boy band 'All Time Low' to highlight a few key points about their image to the two different genres. We have looked at the appeal, their style and their identity so we can portray these qualities in our band.

This is how we feel the All Time Low appeal to their male fans

This is how we see the All Time Low appealing to their female fans
To apply this to our band, we would take their fashion style, their hair, poses and their attitude and create an identity that would appeal to the same audience as the All Time Low fans.

Target Audience

We decided that we would set our target audience as the female majority of the fans mainly because it works for the bands, You Me At Six, All Time Low and Fall Out Boy.

We also feel that this target audience would be easier to connect to with our video concept. However the appeal for the male side would be the music so we feel that this would balance out the aspect of the band.

Lyrical Analysis

Asking all your friends and it's clear where they will go,
(This can represent being pressured into something by peers.)
Looking back on day
And speaking out for more
'Cause lights goes down as people gets wiser
Just remember
(Remembering back of the event where our music video takes place.)
Chorus 1
In the nighttime
It's the right time
As the ceiling hits the floor
(Shows that this event turned there whole world upside down.)
It's the season
I got no reasons
Are you feeling insecure?
(Speaking to the audience and asking them a creepy question.)
Ooh, In the nighttime
Ha!
(Could represent a stereotypical evil laugh.)
Verse 2
Thinking of the subjects that you never bring to light
(Evil subjects are never really spoken about in public.)
Kept in, in the day
And brought out in the night
(Representing that most evil behaviour happens in the night time.)
'Cause views are strong when you're believing
Inter-meaning
(Everything has two meanings.)
Chorus 2
In the nighttime
It's the right time
As the ceiling hits the floor
It's the season
I got no reasons
Are you feeling insecure?
Ooh, In the nighttime
Ha!
Instrumental (Guitar Solo)
Chorus 3 (Extended)
In the nighttime
It's the right time
As the ceiling hits the floor
It's the season
I got no reasons
Are you feeling insecure?

In the nighttime
It's the right time
As the ceiling hits the floor
It's the season
I got no reasons
Are you feeling insecure?

In the nighttime
It's the right time
As the ceiling hits the floor
It's the season
I got no reasons
Are you feeling insecure?
Ooh, In the nighttime

In the nighttime
Ooh, in the nighttime

Market Strategy

Case Study- All Time Low

Jack
1. The record label that is behind 'All Time Low' is called Interscope Records who are very mainstream label this means that they are not suited towards one genre but instead gather artists from a range of genres with the intent of getting chart toppers. There aim is to take the act and sell them to a variety of audiences this will give the chance of being more successful.

This are just some of the artists that Interscope Records sign.
2. The function of 'All Time Low's' website is to advertise the artist through the band blog which is updated weekly with both videos and images. This personalises with the fans directly. It also has a tour guide function that shows when and where they are playing shows this gives the audience the chance to find out where they are playing. There website also contains a media player plays there previous music videos and music. They also have a running theme throughout the website which sets the image for the band.

3. From the website I have gathered the the brand identity of 'All Time Low' as a trendy band who are up to date fashionably but they also have there own quirky fashion sense. They are also marketed as social party boys who have a lot of fun. I can tell that they are branded as this because in there music videos they are seen joking around with friends and also they are socialising.

4. The target audience for 'All Time Low' is females between the ages of 15 to 17 years old. The evidence to support this is the fact that in most of there music videos they are shown with young girls and this is a clue by the marketing to what they want there target audience to be. They attract there target audience by dressing in a quirky way which makes me them stand out because they are unique. They also dress in light colours which makes them look less threatening and more feminine to appeal to females.

All Time Low and their quirky fashion sense.

5. There website is designed to appeal to the target audience because of the way it is designed the colours used are red, black and white. This red can represent love because of love hearts that are stereotypically drawn by teenage girls. They also have a house font that runs through the whole website this font has been designed so it looks cartoony and like a teen has drawn it and teens will be able to relate to this aspect. There website is also fully connected with several different social networking sites this makes it easy to share there information with friends.

There website house font.

6. The marketing strategies behind 'All Time Low's' website is an accesible one. They do this by linking their site up with several different social networking sites so that its easy to share there blog entries and videos with friend using such sites as Twitter or Facebook. They also have a blog system set up on their website in the which the band post a personal blog entry every week and this makes them seem more relatable and more like normal guys.

An example of how 'All Time Low's' website is linked up with several different social networking sites.
7. They have many different options to buy content on 'All Time Low's' website. The main of this being the official store where fans can buy merchandise straight from the website. This is useful as it has easy access and the customer would know that the store is legal. They also have links to 'All Time Low's' itunes store which contains a library of music that can be purchased online. They also have a special fan club called 'The Hustler Club' in which you get a package of band merchandise and also you get a chance to buy tickets before they go on public sale. This a membership so the customer would have to pay monthly.
